Chapter 140

“Jason, what’s up with you?” Evadne looked puzzled and surprised.

She always thought highly of Jason, but there he was looking all beat up and lost , eyes bloodshot, l*ps pale as a sheet, like a puppy left homeless in a downpour.

“Jason, are you here because of Elspeth?”

Ca**ius came up to Evadne, his steps steady, his eyes soft, as he wiped his hand some hands with a pristine white silk cloth.

Evadne glanced at him and saw specks of blood on the cloth.

“I’m sorry. I’m really sorry!” Jason kept apologizing, bowing deeply to them.

Just as Evadne was puzzled, Arnold gave her a buzz.

“Arnold?”

“Sis, Elspeth just left my place.”

Arnold’s voice was heavy with resignation, seemingly self– blaming as he said, “My team and I have been gathering evidence on Elspeth’s abuse of power and bribery, but she’s way ahead of us, shifting all blame to Earl . Frederic got her a really slick lawyer, Cedric Dempsey. That guy is ruthless; he k nows exactly how to exploit legal loopholes. My evidence fell short, so I had to l et Elspeth go.”

“It’s alright, Arnold, you’ve done your best. And we hit our target, as long as we’v e got the Westguard project under our belt. Everything else, we can take it slow.”

Evadne was calm, but those around her were all fuming as they were itching to g ive Elspeth a good thrashing.

Elspeth was no saint, but Evadne knew that they could take their time dealing with that woman.

J

At that point, Frederic was still head over heels for Elspeth, he would surely go all out to help her. Escalating the confiict between two big conglomerates for a single project, wasting resources, j ust wasn’t worth it at that time.

“Uh, Evadne, Jason already rang me up, he seemed quite upset. Comfort him a bit, this has nothing to do with him. H e cares too much about your feelings, afraid that you’re upset, so he’s under a lot of stress,” Arnold sighed.

“I got it.”

After hanging up, Evadne got the full picture of what had happened, her gaze at Jason was complicated, “ Jason.”

*Ms. Evadne, this is our family’s fault. I’m ready to take all the blame,” Jason’s e yes were red as he was ashamed and couldn’t accept that his family had done s uch a thing. looking at him was heartbreaking.

He had found out today that his brother took on Elspeth’s case, he was so mad t hat he stormed into Cedric’s law firm and had a big blowout with him in his offic e.

“Our dad was upright and selfiess, honest and clean. He pissed off a lot of people while in offi ce! The moment he retired, those people were circling us like hawks, wanted to get back at us, frame us! If it wasn’t for Chairman Emeric’s help, hiring our dad a s a legal advisor for the conglomerate, protecting us, how could our parents hav e had a peaceful retirement? How could your law firm have thrived like this? Now Ms. Evadne is going after Elspeth, how can you defend the Abernathy group, make excuses for Elspeth? Isn’t this betrayal?”

Jason hadn’t had a fight with his brother for over twenty years, but this time, for Evadne, he went all out.

“The Ashbournes have been good to us, but that doesn’t mean our whole family has to kowtow to them! And besides, our dad has won so many cases for Chairm an Emeric over the years, any debt of gratitude has been paid off! I’m a professi onal lawyer, to me, everyone is a client. If it’s a case I can handle, and the terms are right, I’ll take it, whether it’s the Abernathy group or the Ashbourne group, i t simply doesn’t matter to me! You, on the other hand, our parents worked hard to raise you, provided you with an elite education, poured so much effort into y ou, all so you can do big things! Not so you can cater to every whim of Ms. Evadne!”

Cedric’s words stung Jason hard.

He had given Evadne his whole heart, but his family was pulling him back.

He really couldn’t face Ms. Evadne anymore.

“Jason, what are you talking about.”

Evadne frowned and smiled, like she was coaxing a child, her hands on his trem bling shoulders, gently shaking him, “Don’t blame yourself, and don’t pick a fight with your family over this. Elspeth is an insignificant baddie; how could she possibly affec t our families‘ relationship? Affect your mood?”

‘Ms. Evadne,” Jason’s voice choked, filled with guilt.

“Mr. Cedric taking on Elspeth’s case, I totally understand this, and I absolutely have no grudge.”

Evadne looked steadfast, saying earnestly, “Professionals should do professional things, a professional lawyer sh ouldn’t be swayed by social niceties. If the Abernathy group has offered Mr. Ced ric a good enough deal, then Mr. Cedric has the right to stick to his professional ethics and take on the Abernathy group’ s case. If the Ashbourne group needs legal help down the line, I believe Mr. Cedr ic would lend a hand, wouldn’t he?”

Jason shyly lowered his head, nodding slightly.

After they got in the car, Ca**ius took Evadne’s hand, gently stroking her palm a nd asking, “Evadne, what’s your next move?”

“Find Acacia and George’s illegitimate daughter. But first, I need to make my en emies expose themselves.”

Evadne’s eyes sparkled with intelligence, narrowing slightly, “George said that o nly Acacia’s mother Una knows where the child is, so let’s have Una help us find our way. That way, we won’t have to do the digging ourselves.”

Ca**ius smiled slightly, then asked, “And what about Acacia? What’s your game plan?”

“To drive her mad before I make her miserable.”

Evadne yawned, feeling sleepy and she also inquired, “Isn’t she about to get en gaged to Thaddeus? How can we make her fall from grace if she isn’t standing on a high pedestal?”

“Evadne, Thaddeus really has lost his marbles,” Ca**ius was deeply shocked rec alling what George had said.

“Ah, he’s been blind as a bat for a while now. No matter, I’ve found myself again, and I want this lousy man to get lost ASAP!”

Suddenly, Evadne remembered something, quickly pulled out her phone, found the photo of Avery and then she had snapped. “Here, check out this guy, do you recognize him? I was nearly stabbed by George the other day, but thanks to this gentleman, I only got a scratch.”

Ca**ius exclaimed in surprise. “Really? Then you should thank him properly.”

“But he kept his identity a mystery. The kicker is, he knows me!”

Evadne’s curiosity piqued as she recalled the man’s smooth, jade–like face.

Although she was a woman, she had a man’s desire for control and didn’t like an ything or anyone sl*pping from her grasp.

Ca**ius moved closer to her, examining the photo closely.

Suddenly, his eyes lit up, and he turned to look at Evadne in surprise.

“Evadne, you really don’t know him?”

“Huh?” Evadne looked puzzled, “Should I know him?”

“I remember you two were pretty tight when you were kids.”

“What?!” Evadne looked at the photo and she was confused.

He seemed familiar, but she just couldn’t place him.

“He’s Jeff Chambers’s youngest son, Avery. He was a bit of a loner as a kid, didn’t talk much. You were the only one who’d play with him. You really don’t rememb er him?” “He’s Little Critter?!” Evadne was fiabbergasted, “Wow, when did he get so tall!”

Late at night, Avery’s private club was bustling.

Under the dim lights, men and women were letting loose, raising their gla**es, a nd living it up as they were feeling that they were on the moon.

Only Avery sat alone in a corner, maintaining his elegance, no matter how wild t he party got.

No woman even dared to approach Mr. Avery, knowing he was cold, aloof, and no t to be messed with. No one wanted to disappear from Elmsworth.

“Mr. Avery, I might not be able to make it to the yacht party.”

A tipsy young man sat down next to Avery, looking gloomy as he continued, “My dad wants me to go on a blind date, and I really don’t want to! Which rich guy in Elmsworth gets married in their twenties? Only Thaddeus would; he was always dreaming of family life!”

Avery took a sip of his wine, “If you don’t want to meet the girl, just cancel the date. It’s as s imple as that”

“I can’t!” The spoiled young man tugged at his tie, looking troubled, “My date is with Emeric’s daughter from Skyrim! Her name is Evadne!”

Avery’s eyes glinted with a sharp light.

“I have a win–win idea,” He expressed his excitement with that sentence.

“What idea?” The young man’s eyes lit up.

Avery finished his wine, and squinted his eyes under the lights, his handsome face looking a bit sinister.

“You go to the yacht party and I’ll go on the blind date.”
